The only way to experience Maui is to visit someone who can personally show you certain "hidden" spots. Also, most tourists just aren't in good enough physical shape to handle some of the explorations here: Steep and muddy banks with only the dwindling remains of a rope rock-climbing and swimming (sometimes in the ocean, with strong currents and hideous waves, depending on the time of year). Children, parents, have been swept out to sea.some bad times for many families who aren't properly prepared for the potentially harsh conditions. The problem is that many of the remote places on the Road to Hana that are listed in the book don't explicitly warn of certain dangers (water levels, weather, etc) and many people have lost lives or been airlifted out with broken limbs. These days, its not any more insightful than the many blogs and other guidebooks out there. Lots of liability issues and trespass issues involved with some of the spots that USED to be in the book (but allegedly are not longer listed because of legal problems). It used to be that if that book was seen on the front seat of your car, your window was broken.
